I have no idea of the true name of this nine patch quilt block. I found a line drawing with no name attached, liked the design and so, using colours of stars in the night sky, I came up with the name Burning Star. Feel free to contact me with the correct name if you like and I will be happy to credit you with that find.
Choose to make this block if you would like to escape from the usual construction of a quilt block. This block has half square triangles, flying geese — nothing different there — but it also uses the cut pieces of the quarter square triangles individually rather than making a single unit — to create the centre patch of the square in a square unit.
The sample quilts shown below are both designed on point, but look very different. The addition of the plain, red blocks add a little more colour interest, if that is your goal. However, if you are focusing on shapes, then perhaps the other quilt catches your eye.
