With a name like Casino Royale, I immediately thought of a roulette wheel and so had to make this quilt block in black and red.
Originally, this block was a four patch, but I decided the centre patch didn’t need to have extra seams and therefore more bulk, so I replaced the four half square triangle units in the centre with a square in the square patch. The resultant structure meant this block had to be sewn as a nine patch instead. All in all, it is an easy block to make since a nine patch is usually the type of quilt block most quilters learn as their first project.
The sample quilts illustrated both use 90 degree rotations of some of the blocks in the quilts, which then leads to creating secondary patterns — one of my favourite “tools” in designing a quilt. These quilts are “James Bond” ready!
