I’m really dating myself, but I remember when I was a young girl there was a television show called “The Farmer’s Daughter“. As soon as I read the name of this quilt block, I was taken back in time.
This block is a five patch (which simply means that it is designed on a 5 x 5 grid), and an easy one at that. However, my preference (for construction ease only) is to sew it as an uneven nine patch, rather than in five rows of five patches. It is comprised only of squares and half square triangles (the first pieced quilt patch any new quilter learns).
The sample quilts illustrated show you that even though the block is easy to sew, that does not mean you must make a boring quilt. And, you will notice that these quilts look nothing alike, even though they are made using only the one quilt block. By adding in shocks of extra colour in the blank blocks, or by separating the blocks by sashing strips, all sorts of possibilities open up for a stunning quilt.
