You might see some similarities in this Ornate Star quilt block – perhaps thinking “Now where have I seen that block before?” To me at least, it looks a lot like another nine patch block — the Ohio Star. The quarter square triangles are there –- but there is much more interest added to this Ornate Star block with the square in a square patch featured in each corner. I really like this particular patch and don’t understand why it is not used more often. Perhaps it is the math needed to calculate the size of the centre square of each patch. Well, I have helped you out there and featured this block in three different sizes.
I was also playing around with the colour scheme of this block by reading about colour combinations for fabulous clothing outfits. If it works for a great outfit, why not for a quilt?! So that is how this colour scheme came about.
Both of the sample quilts illustrated are set on point. However, you might choose a straight setting of the blocks and you will notice that you get an entirely different looking quilt. The stars seem to disappear but other shapes take over to give you a totally different look to the block. I won’t spoil it for you, but use this information as an idea that there are so many more ways to feature your blocks to get an very different quilt than your friend.
